New Ideas for
Your Vintage Ephemera
By Laurie Nienhaus

When you think of ephemera, it's likely vintage postcards, calling cards or magazine covers that first come to mind.

But, by definition, ephemera is anything originally destined for a "markedly short life." It could be ticket stubs, menus, or theatre programs - anything that was originally produced for a practical purpose.

One reason collectors love ephemera is that it documents the everyday life of men and women.

But what do we do with it now? You could begin a scrapbook as the Victorians did. Or, you could:

1. Scan your favorite ephemera images and then create your own stationary, postcards or recipe cards.

2. Create your own Christmas ornaments by copying your colorful ephemera onto card stock. Cover the image with Modge Podge and then lightly sprinkle with glitter. Punch a hole into the top and run narrow piece of silk ribbon through the opening.

3. Create your own "painting" by enlarging your favorite ephemera image at a copy shop.  Decoupage it onto an appropriate sized canvas.

4. Have a piece of glass cut to fit inside an antique tea or bed tray. Arrange your ephemera under the glass.

5. Make a color copy of your holiday ephemera, cut around it with an Exacto knife and glue it to a scented pillar candle.
