Basic Bookmark
1. Pull lace through the large split ring.
2. Fold each short end of lace under 1/4".
3. Fold lace in half, aligning sides and folded edges.
4. Hand stitch all lace edges together. Gently pull on the split ring and stitch along the arc encased by the lace.
5. Arrange beads as desired on three head pins and attach a small split ring to each head pin using the same wire turning technique used for earrings.
6. Connect each small split ring to the larger split ring.
Leaf & Pansy Construction
1. Create the leaf by folding the unwired ribbon in half. Finger press to find the center.
2. Open the ribbon and fold as shown in Diagram C. Stitch as shown and pull thread tightly to gather. Bring your needle back through the gathers and knot the thread.
3. Create the back petals of the pansy by first cutting two 4" sections from your wired ribbon and arranging them as shown in Diagram A. Hand baste a running stitch along the outside edge, stitching as shown.
4. Gather the ribbon to form the two arcs. Bring your needle back through the gathers and take one backstitch. Pin to crinoline and tack in place.
5. Create the pansy face by folding the remaining wired ribbon as shown in Diagram B. Secure both folds with pins and stitch as shown. Backstitch over your beginning knot as you will be pulling the ribbon very tightly. Remove pins and gather tightly. Back stitch and then bring your needle back through and a little past your beginning knot so both knots "kiss". Arrange over back petals and stitch to crinoline.
6. Using your fingers, pleat and fold the pansy's edges to create a ruffled effect.
7. Flatten the pansy by holding a steam iron 1/4" above the pansy and hitting it with a shot of steam. Place a book over the damp pansy for an hour or so.
8. Arrange the leaf as desired and stitch to the back of the crinoline.
9. Stitch seed beads to the pansy's center. Trim away excess crinoline and stitch entire piece to the top of the bookmark, covering roughly 1" of the top of the bookmark.
