Suggested
fabrics:
Fashion Fabric:
velveteen, velvet, linen, poplin, satin, light brocade
Overlay:
netting, tulle, or gauze
Lining:
A cotton lining is best for simply wooden fans, as the fan's rough edges
will snag finer fabrics such as silk and satin.
Please
note: It's best to read through all directions before beginning.
Seam allowances are included in the pattern. All seams, unless
otherwise noted, are stitched 1/4". A rotary cutting system is helpful
for this pattern.
Cutting Instructions
1. Cut 2
A from both fashion fabric and lining.
2. Cut 1 A from netting, tulle, or gauze.
3. Cut one 5" x 16" rectangle from netting for front overlay. The
shorter measurement lies along the straight of grain. An actual pattern
piece is not included but can be easily cut using a rotary cutting
system.
Beginning Construction
1.
Transfer all pattern markings onto the right side of one velveteen A.
2. Using a 1/8" seam, stitch netting A onto the right side of the
second velveteen A.
3. Run a gathering stitch down each long side of the netting overlay.
4. Run a third gathering stitch down the middle of the overlay. This
will be 21/2"
from either left side. Take a short
backstitch as you begin and leave
the thread loose at the opposite end.
5. Adjust the side gathers to fit between the dots on each side of the
marked velveteen A. Pin so that the back stitched portion of the
center gathering lies at the top of A and the loose thread is at the
bottom. Stitch each side.
portion of the center
gathering lies at the top of A and the loose thread is at the bottom.
Stitch each side.
6. Gently pull the bottom thread of the center gathering line. This
will diagonally pull the gathers on each side, forming a V at the top.
Pull until the point of the V reaches the center dot.
7. Arrange gathers evenly, lining up the bottom edge of the netting
with the bottom edge of the velveteen. Pin the gathered seam directly
over the center drawn line. Machine baste over the centerline from B to
C and along the bottom edge.
Embellishment
1. Place
a row of pins 1/2" on each side of the center gathered seam.
2. Fold one end of the 3/8" wide ribbon under 1/4".
3. Beginning at the top of the netting and keeping the ribbon within
the pins, begin to fold (not twist) the ribbon back and forth on itself.
Pin as you work down the length of the fan case. The folds should
lay upon one another in a random fashion. Refer to Diagram 1.
4. Hand stitch each side of the ribbon overlay and anywhere along the
middle where a fold is not lying flat.
5. Use a beading needle to stitch pearls into the creases and folds of
the scrunched ribbon. Refer to Diagram 1. Always takes a
backstitch on the back of the fabric before adding the next pearl.
Finishing
1. Lay
cording directly above the netting so that 1/4" extends beyond the
edge. Stitch in place.
2. Lay both velveteen A's right sides together and stitch along the
sides and bottom.
3. Trim seams and clip curves. Turn.
4. Stitch lining right sides together. Trim seams and clip curves.
5. Without turning lining, insert it into the fan case. A chopstick or
long knitting needle is helpful for pushing the lining into place.
Align seams and stitch 1/8" around the top edge.
6. Cut an 81/2"
section off the length of 11/2"
wide ribbon. Stitch the short ends together. Lay right sides together
with the top of the fan case. Match seams and stitch. Do not trim
seams. Fold top of ribbon to inside seam and hand stitch.
Fuchsia Bauble
1. Cut a
51/4"
length of 11/2"
ribbon and fold each short end so that they overlap at the center of the
ribbon's length.
2. Stitch as shown in Diagram 2, making sure your stitching goes over
the edges at the corners as shown.
3. Pull gathers tightly to form fuchsia's petals. Knot on the
underneath side and arrange the four petals evenly.
4. Thread a beading needle with a 15" length of thread. Do not knot.
5. To form the fuchsia's stamens, pick up 5 small pearls and push them
to within 8" of thread's opposite end.
6. Add on a #10 or #11 seed bead and push needle back through all five
pearls.
7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 two more times, each time pushing your bead
length toward the previous one so that you have three stamens dangling
within the bell of the fuchsia.
8. Remove the beading needle and thread both thread ends onto your
favorite needle. (If using stones other than freshwater pearls,
transferring the needles may not be necessary.)
9. Insert the needle into the underneath side of the fuchsia and bring
it out at the top of the flower.
10. Again thread the beading needle with one end of the thread. Pick
up a larger pearl, followed by a smaller one.
11. Remove the beading needle and thread the other thread end. Pull
this thread through both beads.
12. Again transferring to your favorite needle, attach fuchsia to
bottom center of fan case by inserting the needle into the seam and back
out on the same seam 1/2" away. Knot.
13. Repeat by again inserting the needle into the seam next to the
knot. Bring it out again another 1/2" away. Knot again.
Important:
Due to different browser configurations, you must draw pattern piece A.
It's easy though! Be sure your the pattern piece measures:
- 4" wide
- 8.5" from the top to the bottom straight edge on each side
- 9.75" from the top to the bottom center
- Dot A is .5" from the top edge on each side.
- The stitching line for netting overlay (B to C) 7" from the center
bottom edge.
